Driving through beautiful palm oil plantations, south of Tecún Umán, will lead you to Ocós. This is a forlorn little beach front village. There’s nothing much to be seen here, except for some sandy streets with some old huts and buildings. Even the traces of the old civilization are nowhere to be seen nowadays. Most of the people come here just to take the ferry to cross the Rio Naranjo.
History and Culture
Historically, this town was once very famous, for it was the centre of the Ocós people some 3,100 to 3,250 years ago. The primary focus of the community was on fishing and farming, and the village was in fact one of the earliest civilization known in the region.
