Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa is located some 23km along the Carretera al Pacifico. It is a typical Pacific town, with some archaeological sites. Other than that, the town itself does not have much to offer to travellers in the way of sights, and most of those who come here just drop by for an hour or two. The town is quite well-developed, it has everything you need such as banks and ATMs.

Around and closeby
The Pipil site of Bilbao was founded about a century ago, and today, it is a nice monument known for its beautiful carvings, nicely preserved in slabs of black volcanic rocks. Most of the stones were taken out and shipped to Germany, although some still remain here. You can get to the site easily, by walking up from the plaza and following the directed route. It is not complicated. Finca El Baúl is another popular tourist attraction, located 5km further. This archaeological site also has some nice stone monuments, such as the one of the standing figure wearing a skirt and a beautiful headdress. There is a small alter here in front of the stones, which is a ceremonial place, used by the locals, especially for animal sacrifices.

Sightseeing
The plaza is the main centre of the town, although the charm of the place is shadowed by the ugly municipal structure.

Getting there
You can get to this town by bus, which will drop you at the entrance road, from there it is about a ten minute walk to the town centre. You can either catch Pullman buses anywhere on the route, or buses from Guatemala City.
