Ceibal is a ruined site of the Maya civilization, located in the south of the Petén department of Guatemala. It is situated on the La Pasión River. Many of Ceibal's late monuments show artistic influence from central Mexico and from the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Sightseeing
A lot of the monuments have not been restored, leaving them surrounded by climbing jungle. This makes the whole site feel more magical and mystical. It really is like a forgotten city. Don't miss the huge altar in front of structure 78's stairway. It measures more than 2 metres in diameter, has the face of a jaguar and is supported by two couching, human figures.

Getting there
From Sayaxché you can rent a boat if you ask around on the waterfront. The boat will take you there and back and you'll have about 2 hours at the ruins. By road Ceibal is 17km from Sayaxché, you can hitch or catch a bus. Any vehicle heading south towards Cruce del Pato will pass the entrance. From there it's an 8km walk through the jungle to reach the site.
