El Zotz is a Mesoamerican archaeological site of the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization, located in the Petén Basin region, some 19km north-west of the major centre of Tikal. Its contemporary setting is near the Tikal National Park. It is a large Classic era site and contains many mounds and ruins that have not been excavated. The area has caves and swamps and is a protected biotope, it is known for the thousands of bats that fly out from under the cliffs at sunset.
Getting there
The quickest way to get to El Zotz is to get a bus or a pick-up from San Andrés to Cruce Dos Aguadas and walk or hitch the rest of the way. The more scenic way is to arrange a three-day tour from Flores or Uaxactún.
