Surrounded by lush forest and teeming with fish, alligators and turtles, this picturesque lake is a wonderful place to visit. There are many Maya ruin sites dotted around the lake shores which suggest that this lake was once an important trade centre for them. If you want to get the best out of your trip to the lake then it’s probably best to join a tour. You can go on an arranged tour from Flores or you could try to arrange a tour yourself with a local guide and boatman. You’re likely to need three or four days to really explore everywhere, by boat, on foot and possibly on horseback. You can also do a bit of fishing if that’s your thing; the lake is full of bass and snook. There are also some lovely hot springs on the shore so make sure your have time for a soak in them.
