The hectic town of Santa Elena lies at the end of the causeway, across the water from the island of Flores. The town is dusty and dry most of the time but when the rains come the streets become sludgy with mud. Santa Elena and its even less attractive neighbour San Benito are often referred to under the name of Flores.

Getting there
There are frequent buses from Guatemala City to Santa Elena. The Línea Dorada buses carry on through Santa Elena, across the causeway, to Flores.
