Known as Baja's best whale watching site, Puerto López Mateos is nicely protected from the open Pacific by the barriers of Isla Magdalena. Particularly during the whale watching season, the narrow waterway becomes an cruising strip. The town is basically located 34km west of Cuidad Insurgentes, accessible by road. It's a really small town, with a population of merely 2,400, which explains why there's nothing more than whale watching to do here. In fact, the best viewing spot is not directly in the town, but 27km south at the Curva del Diablo. You can easily arrange a three hour excursion from the town.
