The city of León, officially named León de los Aldama, is the fifth most populous city in Mexico and the largest city in the state of Guanajuato. Also known as the “The Shoe Capital”, it features large factories that not only produce shoes, but also boots, belts, jackets, and other leather accessories, serving both national and international markets.
Tourist Offices
The tourist information kiosk is in the Plaza Principal, it's open from 10am – 8pm, Monday to Friday.
Sightseeing
Visit the historical centre and shop for shoes. Every major brand from Nike to Steve Madden shoes are outsourced to León amongst other places. The Metropolitan Park is over 260 hectares of land created for recreation, sports and enjoying nature. The park has a pier, bicycle paths, a train, a rose garden, orchards, vegetable gardens, picnic tables and camping grounds. Martyrs Square commemorates a local power struggle between different political factions which took place in 1946. The square is surrounded on three sides by beautiful neoclassic archways.
Getting there
You can take a plane from Mexico City, it's a 45 minute flight with some nice scenery. You can also fly from Guadalajara, Tijuana, Monterrey, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco. There are also daily buses from Guanjuato, Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende.
