This beautiful 563 sq km Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is located at the easternmost part of Michoácan, spanning across the Mexican border. This place gets extremely busy during late October and early November when millions of monarch butterflies arrive for winter hibernation. They cover the whole fir tree forest during the night and early morning, and as the day moves on they flutter around like gold and orange snowflakes. In the afternoons they normally cover the ground like a delicate carpet. This beautiful sight is open for public access, but dates and times of access to the park vary so check these with a tour agent before you go.
