Zacatecas is located in the north-central region of Mexico and is the capital of the Zacatecas state. The state is best known for its rich deposits of silver, its colonial architecture and its importance during the revolution. The state is also known as one of the safest states in the country. The state is somewhat mountainous, being traversed in the west by lateral ranges of the Sierra Madre Occidental, and by numerous isolated ranges in other parts, such as Mazapil, Norillos, Guadalupe.
Tourist Offices
The tourist information office is on Avenida Hidalgo, 403. It's on the first floor of an old colonial building and it's open from 9am – 8pm, Monday to Saturday and 10am – 7pm on Sundays.
Sightseeing
Take the teleférico (cable car) to or from La Bufa, passing high above the city centre or visit the no longer active silver mine, El Edén, to see how the mountain under the city was hollowed out by hand over a period of three hundred years. Most of the rock was carried up in baskets on the miners' backs, as they climbed out on ropes.
Getting there
Catch a bus from Mexico City, Guadalajara or Monterrey, the three main cities in Mexico.
