After travelling along the road that cuts through the deep and dramatic canyon of Zopilote, you will eventually reach Chilpancingo. Chilpancingo is a university city and the capital of the Guerrero State. The town itself has a lovely plaza with some impressive neo-classic architecture and sculptures

Around and closeby
While in town you can pay a visit to the small neighbouring village of Chilapa. The best day to go is on Sunday, when they have a huge craft market that’s spread right across the centre of town.

Sightseeing
Catch a colectivo and visit the Grutas de Juxtlahuaca to see the olmec cave paintings. These limestone caves are an intricate network of chambers and tunnels full of stalagmites and stalactites. There is also an enormous underground lake surrounded by artefacts and ancient skeletons. The actual cave paintings date back as far as 500 AD

Getting there
You can reach Chilpancingo by bus from Acapulco, Mexico City, Cuernavaca and Taxco.
