Sayulita is a small fishing village about 45km north of Puerto Vallarta, in the state of Nayarit. Like most of the greater Banderas Bay area, the sheer remoteness and thick jungle prevented major colonization until the late 1800's. Known for its rivermouth surfbreak, roving surfers discovered Sayulita in the late 60's with the construction of Mexican Highway 200. Today, Sayulita is a popular off-the-beaten-path travel destination. Still a mecca for beginner surfers of all ages, the quaint town boasts numerous art galleries and restaurants.

Around and closeby
A town five kilometres north of Sayulita, San Francisco Nayarit, is well-known for its turtle hatchery program. As part of this program, environmental groups hatch endangered greenback sea turtles and release them into the sea. Visitors from Sayulita are encouraged to attend the release of the hatchlings and donate to the environmental cause.

Getting there
