The town of Amecameca is located 60km east of Mexico City, and is easily accessible by road. It’s a medium size town of 32,000 people, but most of the time it's quiet and sleepy. People come here because it is the key staging point for an Izta climb. The small town itself is actually an attraction, a very modest and nice destination. It is surrounded by volcanoes and 16th century churches are the backdrop. Just like a modern town, it has everything from ATMs to Internet cafés around the plaza, and everyday, next to the church, is the famous, lively market. The whole town can be covered by bicycle or taxi.
Around and closeby
One of the most important places in Amecameca, and also a must-see, is the Parque Nacional Sacromonte, which is above the town, to the west. It’s a 450,000 square metre national park which protects a pilgrimage site. The site was built over a cave and was the retreat of the Dominican friar Martin de Valencia. The park has a very nice environment, with beautiful walks, and views of the town spread below. The place is also known for climbing.
