Ixmiquilpan is now a modern day Mezquital Valley, which serves as an ethnic enclave for a few hundred thousand Otomi people, who are from the state of Hidalgo, and considered the descendants of ancient inhabitants. This town is now the current commercial hub for Otomi, and was once the capital.

History and Culture
The valley is known for it's fine Mexican ayates, which are cloths woven from ixtle or maguey fibre. The traditional Otomi women’s dress is a quechquemitl, an embroidered shoulder cape worn over an embroidered cloth blouse.

Sightseeing
There are markets every Monday, in which you can find all the crafts, such as miniature musical instruments made of juniper wood with shell or pearl inlay, drawstring bags, and not to forget the embroidered textiles. If you happen to travel on other days, fret not, they are available in the community of El Nith.
