Coixtlahuaca village is famous for its 16th century Dominican monasteries, which are remnants of the Mexican colonial era. This small village is located a few kilometres east of the Coixtlahuaca toll booth on 135D, which is about 30km north of Nochixtlan. It has a population of almost a thousand people.

Sightseeing
Coixtlahuaca’s main monastery is the most interesting of the three. It is bejeweled with a renaissance façade. The ruined capilla abierta is a must see and you can climb to the 2nd floor or the roof to get a spectacular view of the landscape. The capilla abierta was used in early Mexican monasteries for preaching to crows and the indigenous people. The admission into the monastery is free, but it is currently undergoing some restoration work.
