This small, but impressive village lies about 10km east of Oaxaca, along the Hwy 190. People come here to see the El Arbol del Tule, known as the “Tree of El Tule” in English. This tree is apparently the largest single biomass on earth, although some say it’s just a mere claim. It is so big that the 17th century church in the village looks extremely small in comparison to it. The huge cypress has a circumference of 58metres and it is 42metres high. It really is a wonder, apparently the tree is as old as 2,000 to 3,000 years.

History and Culture
Good things don’t last, however. The beautiful old tree is under threat currently from the industrialized surroundings, which use its water source as theirs. There’s a campaign going on to get an Unesco World Heritage status for the tree, which states that the 110 square kilometer basin that supplies water to the tree needs to be protected, and they are also asking for reforestation in the nearby mountains and the creation of a green zone too.

Getting there
There are buses from Oaxaca to El Tule on a regular basis.
