The small village of Guelatao is located about 60km from Oaxaca, and is famous as the birthplace of Benito Juarez. In remembrance, there’s a statue of Benito Juarez as a shepherd at the centre of the village. Besides this, there are another two statues among the municipal buildings too, with a small exposition. Being one of the most revered Mexican national heroes, Benito Juarez, was born in this mountain village. His parents died early, and at the age of 12 he went to work. His employer, who saw his potential, decided to help him with his education, and that is how Juarez became a lawyer who fought for the poor people. He eventually became the state governor, opened schools, and cut bureaucracy. Later, after becoming the justice minister, he created several laws which led to much controversy and the War of the Reform. After a lot of struggle, he finally became the president of Mexico.
