On the southern part of the Mitla road, about 29km from Oaxaca, sits the small archaeological site of Lambityeco. Originally from 600AD – 800AD, Lambityeco was the centre of Zapotec. Now, visitors come to see the two patios with striking sculptures. The patios are the only remaining proof of Lambityeco’s ancient past. If you want to see the sculptures on the patios, you can only do so at a distance, from the mound above them.
Sightseeing
The first patio is made up of two carved stone friezes. Each of the carved stones resembles a bearded man holding a bone and a woman with a hairstyle like those of the Zapotec area. Besides the two couple-like figures there is also stucco on tombs nearby. These figures have been thought to have lived in the area around the patio and ruled Lambityeco during those times. The second patio is made up of the two heads of the rain god Cocijo. The god’s figure wears a big headdress that forms the face of a jaguar.
Getting there
Transportaion to Lambityeco is provided by local bus services. To get here, you need to take the bus to Mitla, and ask the driver to drop you off near the site. There are buses leaving frequently from the local bus station.
