Yanhuitlán, together with Coixlahuaca and San Pedro Teposcolula, form a beautiful treasure cove of Mexico’s colonial architecture: the Dominican monasteries. Yanhuitlán is the smallest town among the three, with a population of 839. Currently the Yanhuitlán monastery is undergoing some restoration work on the main altarpieces. The towering monastery is built on top of an important Mixtec religious site, which is just beside Hwy 190, and 14km north-west of Nochixtlan. There’s a church you can visit and take pictures of the valuable works of art, like the fine Mudejar ceiling suspended beneath a choir loft, and the remarkable pipe organ.
