Zipolite is a small beach community which lies on the Pacific coast of the southern state of Oaxaca, about three kilometres west of the village of Puerto Ángel. A possible origin of the name is from the Zapotec language meaning beach of the dead, so called for its dangerous ocean currents, rip tides and undertow, which have taken numerous lives. Or, as many visitors would tell you, Beach of the Dead refers to the lifestyle there: once at Zipolite many find it difficult to leave this relaxing oasis behind. "I'm leaving mañana" is the mantra of this beach, for many though, mañana doesn't come for at least a couple of weeks longer than planned.
Sightseeing
A popular destination for backpackers, Zipolite caters to a mostly younger crowd, many of them from Europe, Canada and the USA. One of the attractions is Playa del Amor, or Beach of Love, which is, unofficially, clothing-optional.
Getting there
You can reach this town by colectivo from Puerto Ángel.
