Ciudad Cuauhtémoc has a population of around 2,200, and with just a few houses it’s a bit too small to be called a city. Located some 83km south of Comitán, this small town is the first and last place in Mexico on the Pan-American Highway. The Guatemala border is merely 4km to the south. It’s the starting off point to travel to Guatemala from this part of the country. There are taxis which connect the two countries through this town, and because of this the two sides of the border are well developed for tourism.
Getting there
Getting to Cuauhtémoc is easy. There are frequent buses and combis running to and from Comitán, and some OCC buses to and from San Cristóbal de Las Casas. After that, you can take the buses from La Mesilla for Huehuetenango if you are travelling further south.
