If you drive 51km north-west from Villahermosa, you will reach Tabasco. The ruins of ancient Comacalco are the main attraction here and they are located 3.5km north of Tabasco.
History and Culture
According to history, this place was very important because it was the centre of commerce and trading. Pre-Hispanic luxury goods such as cacao, salt, feathers, deer and jaguar skin, wax, honey, turtle shells, tobacco, chillies, cotton and gem stones were traded here. This site is filled with historical elements, which you can see in the museum and the architecture of the site buildings. The sculptures and engravings are all explained in both English and Spanish, targeting all forms of tourists.
Sightseeing
The ruins are spread around a broad and open central plaza, also known as the Parque Juárez. This unique Maya site has buildings that were made using bricks and/or mortar and oyster shells about 1000 to 1400 years ago. Another major attraction in Comacalco is Hacienda La Luz, a plantation growing cocoa for chocolate.
Getting there
There are plenty of options available for food as well as accommodation. You can drive down or use public transport. First class and second class buses are available from Villahermosa, Paraíso and Frontera.
