Set on a high plain about 90km south-east of San Cristóbal, Comitán is an orderly and prosperous town with colonial character. It has a population of about 80,000 people. Most of the time people bypass here to go to Guatemala, although this town has several good attractions as well as some entertainment for tourists. There are some good places to eat, a couple of museums, some natural and archaeological attractions and the beautiful surroundings are worthy of a visit too.

Around and closeby
El Chiflón waterfalls, Tenam Puente, Lagos de Montebello and the Chinkultic ruins are all accessible to the public. They are much easier to visit if you go on guided tours though.

Sightseeing
On the plaza itself there’s Iglesia de Santo Domingo, with some nice decoration on the tower, dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Next to this is the Centro Cultural Rosario Castellanos, with a patio featuring a wall painting about local history. If you are in town in early July, you can join in the celebrations of the Festival Internacional Rosario Catellanos.
