Formerly known as Frontera Echeverría, this riverside frontier town is known as being the access point to the beautiful ruins of Yaxchilán. The town is located some 16km from the Crucero Corozal junction, on the main route between Chiapas and Guatemala’s Petén region. It is actually placed near the border of Mexico and Guatemala, with the Rio Usumacinta serving as the border mark. You can take the outboard-powered lanchas to the neighbouring country and if you’re a tourist just show your tourist card and they will grant you access.
Sightseeing
The most interesting place here is the modern Museo de la Cuenca del Usumacinta, which displays some good examples of Chol Maya dress, information on post-conquest history and the two notable, finely carved stelae taken from the nearby site of Dos Caobos.
Getting there
You can take the bus, but if you can’t catch one that goes directly to Frontera Corozal then there are other alternatives, such as taking the bus to Crucero Corozal and taking a taxi from there.
