The large Reserva de la Biosfera La Encrucijada is about 1448 square kilometres in size, and is known for the protection of coastal lagoons, sandbars, tropical forests and some tall mangroves. Such an environment is very suitable for wintering and breeding of migratory birds. The forests here are very important too, because they harbor Mexico’s largest number of jaguars, spider monkeys, turtles, crocodiles, caiman, boa constrictors, fishing eagles and waterfowl.
Sightseeing
One of the most popular activities here would be travelling by lancha around the whole reserve, in which you get direct contact with the mangroves and lagoon-side villages. Birding is also pretty popular here, especially during the nesting seasons. Other than that, the sea turtle breeding centre is a good place to visit and it’s also accessible by lancha.
Getting there
Many buses go to Escuintla, from there catch a taxi or colectivo to bring you to Acapetahua. There are regular buses running from beside the railway in Acapetahua to Embarcadero Las Garzas. From there you can catch a lancha to bring you the rest of the way to the park.
