San Lorenzo Zinacantán is in the southern part of the central Chiapas highlands. About 98% of its population are Maya, an indigenous people with linguistic and cultural ties to other highland Maya groups. Zinacantán literally means "land of bats" and comes from the Nahuatl language. The men and the women here both wear pink or purple robes that are beautifully embroidered with flowers.

Sightseeing
There is a small market on Sunday mornings and there are regular feasts throughout the year.

Getting there
You can get here by bus from San Cristobal or you can come on an arranged tour. It’s best to make your visit just a day trip though as there isn’t really any accommodation to speak of.
