Tuxtla Gutiérrez is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Chiapas. It's a modern city with a fairly energetic vibe. The Plaza Cívica is a very busy square in the town centre and it's lined with some of the best restaurants and hotels in the area.
Tourist Offices
There is a tourist office in the Valanci building on Avenida Central Pte. It's open from 8am – 4pm, Monday to Friday, it closes at 2pm on Saturdays.
Sightseeing
The Zoológico Miguel Álvarez del Toro is possibly the best zoo in the whole of Mexico. It's well worth a visit if you're in the area. The Jardín de la Marimba is a great place to go in the evenings. It's located to the west of the town centre, about eight blocks. There are marimba concerts every night with lots of dancing , eating and drinking going on.
Getting there
Tuxtla is well connected to the rest of Mexico and has daily national departures to many cities . There are also frequent departures to San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Getting around
The most convenient means of public transportation are the minibuses (commonly referred to as 'combis'), which are most often modified VW Transporters and Ford Transit vehicles.
