The island of Contoy is uninhabited and is located about 25km north of Isla Mujeres. The only to access it is to join an excursion from Mujeres. Known for its national park and bird sanctuary, there are more than 100 species of birds, including the brown pelicans, olive cormorants, wild turkey, brown boobies, and red pouched frigates. Besides that, the island is also a visiting place for many other animals such as red flamingoes, snowy egrets, and white herons. The island is also known for snorkelling. All around the island there are ideal places for snorkelling, and every month about 1500 people visit for this purpose.
