Progreso is a decent sized resort town; it has a long, pristine beach which is quite popular as it is the closest beach to Mérida. It is also home to the longest pier in the world, a lengthy six kilometres. Unfortunately, due to someone falling off the end on a moped, the pier is now closed to the public. Progreso is a good place to chill out for a few days. There are many nice little boutiques and plenty of restaurants, serving delicious inexpensive dishes. The beach here is clean and not too overcrowded and the sea is a calm and safe place for swimming.

Getting there
There are regular buses, about every 10 minutes or so, leaving from the terminal next to the hotel La Paz in Mérida, for Progreso.
