Valladolid is a great place to base yourself if you plan on visiting the famous Chichén Itzá ruins. This pleasant little town is situated on the road between Cancún and Mérida and is rapidly becoming more popular with the tourists who want to immerse themselves in the history and culture of Mexico.
Tourist Offices
There is a tourist information office on the south-east corner of the plaza where you can pick up a handy map
Sightseeing
Visit the Cenote Zací, on Calle 36, for a swim and then have lunch in the thatched roof restaurant next door. The Cenote X-Kekén is the best one to visit; it’s seven kilometres from town. The water is cool and clean and it’s artificially lit as the only natural light comes through a tiny hole in the cave’s ceiling. There are many tunnels leading off from the Cenote that you can explore, just make sure you bring a torch. You can reach Cenote X-Kekén by colectivo, they leave hourly from outside the Hotel Maria Guadalupe.
Getting there
You can get to Valladolid by bus from Cancún, Mérida and Playa del Carmen. They travel back and forth regularly all day long.
