There is a tiny village named Xpujil along the Escárcega-Chetumal highway. It’s a good base for visiting the ruins in the area such as Becán, Chicanná and Xpujil.
Sightseeing
The ruins of Xpujil are in the area of south Campeche. The architectural style used by the Mayans at this site is known as Rio Bec and it incorporates heavy masonry towers shaped like pyramids or temples that rise at the end of elongated buildings. The Mayans were active in this area mainly during 500-700 AD. Although major excavation has been done at the site, there are still a lot of buildings that have yet to be excavated.
Getting there
Any bus travelling between Chetumal and Escárcega can drop you off in the village of Xpujil.
