Bilwi is the main city of the Puerto Cabezas region. The entire region is made up of indigenous lands. The culture, like the rest of Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, has a very prominent Caribbean influence. The population is mainly Spanish speaking, but there are also very large groups of Creole and Miskito.

Dangers and Annoyances
The town is still a major transit point for cocaine smuggling so be careful when wandering around town and if possible it's always best to take a taxi.

Sightseeing
When going to the beach here it's best to go in a group and if possible with a local. The cleanest beaches are a little way north of town.

Getting there
There are regular flights from Managua and Bluefields. You can get buses to here from Managua, Rosita, Waspám and Siuna.
