If you are brave enough to head into the mining triangle, you’ll want to make time for the fruitful city of Bonanza. The town is a great base camp for exploring the emerald green mountains of the Reserva de Biosfera Bosawas, the Reserva Natural Cerro Cola Blanca and the Mayangna Heartland. There are dozens of swimming holes and hiking opportunities, as well as waterfalls and gold mines to visit.
Getting there
You can reach Bonanza and the rest of the mining triangle on a 12-hour drive from Managua or on a plane ride—both of which are going to cost you, but depending on what you’re looking for, it may be worth the price.
