If you’re travelling down the main El Rama highway, you might want to stop off at El Rama, even if it's just for one night. Although the port town has little in the way of sightseeing, it is worthy as a base camp for exploring the surrounding region or for some other basic activities. If you’re only interested in sightseeing and you don’t need to stop for the night, don’t bother going into El Rama—just pass it by.
Getting there
Buses leave Managua frequently to go to El Rama, nearly every hour, and the ride can take up to 12 hours on a regular bus, even though the Managua-El Rama highway has been nearly completely paved. The bus ride might be worth it, if your goal is to see as much of the countryside as possible. You can also take an airplane or a boat to the city and the surrounding villages, although those two methods may prove to be far too expensive to merit a couple of hours difference in travel time.
