If you’re in Juigalpa and you want to explore the Granite Mountains of the Serrania Amerrisque, there’s no better place to go than the small, nearby town of Santa Domingo. Santo Domingo is attached to La Libertad and is just a few kilometres away from Juigalpa on a decent dirt road.
Sightseeing
Short hikes go from Santo Domingo to Penas Blancas and you can also take tours into the Santo Domingo Mines, which are less than 1 kilometre from the town—the mines are still in use today and you may need a guide to visit one or both of them. The town is also home to the Reserva Montanosa Santo Domingo, a privately owned reserve that houses an organic coffee farm, a swimming hole and what is claimed to be virgin forest—you may be able to arrange overnight camping with the owner.
