If you want to visit an island paradise, then you should head over to the Parque Natural Archiiélago Zapatera, a park protecting thirteen islands in the Lago de Nicaragua. The most familiar of these islands is the Isla Zapatera, sitting in the middle of the lake, a 45 square kilometre island rising to 629 metres above sea level. The park protects what is left of the remaining wet and dry tropical forests, as well as the petroglyphs and statues left by the Chorotega Indians and their ancestors between 500 and 1500 years ago. The park also includes Isla El Muerto—Island of Death, which is covered in carved bedrock. Unfortunately, little has been done to uncover the treasures on Isla El Muerto or any of the other islands due to an extreme lack of funding.
Getting there
Access to the islands is inconvenient—you will have to catch a local boat (your hotel can arrange that) or you’ll have to take a day tour, which may prove to be too expensive for most people.
