Formally known as Tezoatega, this ancient indigenous capital is now one of the most important colonial cities in Nicaragua. In particular, it is the site of the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen María, home of the patron saint and mistress of La Gritería. La Gritería is actually the largest religious event in the country, which is celebrated with fervour. Normally, people come here for the event several days in advance for the Lavada de la Plata or the Polishing of the Silver, whereby the church’s silver filigree altar is cleaned and offerings made. Other than that, the town works at a sleepy and lethargic pace.
