Poneloya is a beach community on the west coast of Nicaragua, near Las Peñitas. It's largley undeveloped which makes it a nice escape from the big towns and cities. The best time to come is during Semana Santa, when it hosts the “Sand Castle and Sculpture Building Contest”. It has a few small hotels in varying states of repair and most of them have a small restaurant of their own serving fresh fish. Head north one kilometre to La Bocanita and you can hire a motor boat to explore the coast. There are frequent buses from León to Poneloya.
