The border town of Somotillo is quite a touristy place. Though the town itself is rather boring, and not really worth the 80km drive that mostly consists of bare grass lands and sparse vegetation. The only redeeming factor is the Reserva Genetic Apacunaca. This genetic resource reserve is not really meant for tourists, but is more of a research and protection habitat for one of four known caches of teosinte, or wild corn.

History and Culture
Corn is intricately related to the country. Corn is actually a Nicaraguan staple food, and teosinte, is a completely different type of corn, unique to itself for being able to live like cacti. Explaining scientifically the technique of how it survives in harsh conditions may well take a whole day. In short, we can say that this wild corn is particularly important to the country.

Sightseeing
If you are not interested in corn then there’s nothing else to see really but since you are in town, you should stop by the two churches.

Getting around
Just hire one of the pedicabs to go around, which can be found in abundance everywhere.
