This highland town of Estelí has some historical significance related to the Sandinista-led revolution. There are many people who visit this town out of sheer curiosity. Located between Managua and the Honduran border, this town is in fact a centre for the agribusiness. One thing that shows this is the numerous amounts of trucks queuing up the Interamericana Highway. This town really has a history that has contributed to the growth of the area. It is quite organised, with the roads and buildings properly numbered, and arranged.
Around and closeby
The surrounding mountains which are known for their beauty are worth visiting. Cecalli or the organic farm, which is located 1km south of town, is also worth visiting. This place is famous for medicinal plants, and don’t forget to visit the museum here, which displays dried and fresh herbs. Some nice products such as herbal teas and organic shampoos can also be purchased here.
Sightseeing
The most famous spot here is the 1823 built Estelí Cathedral, and the murals surrounding the Parque Central. In the park you can find petroglyphs that were brought down from the mountains about a century ago, although most of them seem to be unidentifiable.
Getting there
This town is the transportation hub for the region, plus it also has two major crossings to Honduras. You can easily get a bus to and from various places around the country and across the borders to countries and other towns such as Costa Rica, San Salvador, El Salvador, Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula in Honduras, and many more.
Getting around
You can walk around the town and enjoy the sights. But for the distant tourist spots, such as Cecalli and some others you will have to take a bus or taxi.
