If you’re trying to get off the beaten path on your journey between San Carlos and El Castillo, you can traverse into the jungle and visit the small town of Boca de Sábalos.
Sightseeing
There is plenty of hiking in the small town, some of which leads into the off-limits Reserva Biologica Indio-Maiz. You can also rent a canoe and cross the canal to other parts of the town that are separated by tributaries.
Getting there
It’s fairly easy to get there—you just take the morning boat in and the afternoon boat out since all of the boats between San Carlos and El Castillo will go by the town. If you’re in a hurry or don’t want to mill around all day, just skip this small town like most other tourists and continue your main journey into El Castillo or San Carlos.
