If you’re looking for an adventure in the backcountry and you don’t mind going without electricity and water, you should head over to San Juan de Nicaragua.

Sightseeing
You can visit the remains of Greytown—an old windmill settlement, hike over to Laguna Azul—although you might not want to swim there since bull-sharks have been known to take a rest in the waters, and you can check out Rio Jandio—which runs parallel to the Caribbean coastline and isn’t more than a few hundred metres from the sea at many points. If you’re into fishing, you’ll enjoy some of the best tarpon fishing in the world, although hiring a boat won’t be cheap.

Getting there
Boats leave San Carlos for San Juan de Nicaragua twice a day and the journey takes about eight hours, so be sure it’s what you want to do and where you want to stay—once you’re there, you don’t have a choice.
