The sprawling town of Volcán is spread across a plateau, 1,450 metres up, on the western side of the Volcán Barú. The people of Volcán have learnt how to make good use of the fertile volcanic soil and the town is rapidly growing as a agricultural hotspot. There are many nurseries around town that cultivate ferns and other plants meant for export. There is also a coffee finca, Beneficio Café Volcán Barú, which runs tours during the harvest season, October to February.

Tourist Offices
There is no official tourist information office but the staff at the Hotel Don Tavo are very knowledgeable about the area.

Sightseeing
Las Lagunas de Volcán is a lovely nature reserve to the south west of town. It includes two idyllic lakes that are teeming with marine life; they are also a great spot to do a bit of bird-watching. If you’re a bit of a history buff and are interested in seeing some ancient petroglyths , then you’ll have no trouble catching a bus from town to the Sítio Barriles, six kilometres away.
