Colón is a sea port city on the Caribbean Sea coast of Panama. It is near the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. The city is the capital of Panama's Colón Province. Since the late 1960's, Colón has been in economic decline. Nowadays, the unemployment rate is around 40% and the poverty rate is even larger than that. Because of this the city has a reputation as being aggressive and dangerous. It's known as the dark side of Panama. The once sophisticated city is now a littered slum and it's not a good idea for foreigners to go there. Drugs and violent crime is on the increase and that's not a great advertisement for a holiday destination. If you do decide to visit the city then be extremely cautious. Don't wander around the streets, even during the day, and definitely don't wear or carry anything that will attract unwanted attention.

Sightseeing
One of the good things about Colón is that there is a trade free zone on the outskirts of the city. There is also a cruise ship port that has a lot of bars and restaurants, as well as a shopping centre. Most tourists that arrive here by ship are taken around the port, Colón 2000, or to the Trade Free Zone, or anywhere away from the city centre.

Getting there
If you're not arriving by ship then you can take a bus from Panama City or Portabelo but be sure to take a taxi from the Colón bus terminal to wherever you're going, it's not safe to walk. You can also fly to Colón from Panama City, it only takes about 15 minutes. A train from Panama City will get you here as well.
