You can reach Fort San Lorenzo in an hour from Colón. Fuerte San Lorenzo is brimming with bird life that includes pheasant cuckoos, honeycreepers and the hawk. Reaching here is not a problem because there are many signposts along the way. It lies ahead of the former US military base at Sherman. Fort San Lorenzo lies near the confluence of the Chagres River and the bay. It was built by the Spanish in 1597 with thick blocks of coralline rock. You will get a glimpse of the moss covered cannons, which used to thwart the enemies at one time. There is single British made cannon in the fort, which is presumed to be a relic of a plunder.
