Despite its name, Isla Grande is a small island off the Caribbean coast of Panama, about half an hours drive, depending on road conditions, from the city of Colón. There is a town and several resorts on the island, making it a popular weekend getaway. During the right times of year, the water between the island and the mainland provides an excellent surfing environment.

History and Culture
Most of the people in the town are of Afro-Antillean heritage, descendants of workers from the construction of the Panama Canal.

Sightseeing
There are some great dive sights all around the island and you can hire dive equipment as well as surfboards, snorkelling gear and boats. There are some great hiking trails through the interior of the island though they can be pretty hard going, it's a good idea to hire a machete- wielding guide to help you.

Getting there
It is easy to catch a boat from the locals to and from the island (the area on the coast opposite it is also settled). There are frequent boats to Isla Grande, departing from La Guayra. You can get to La Guayra by bus from Colón, or by pick-up from Portobelo and Sabanitas.
