Portobelo is a port town in the Colón Province of Panama. It is located on the northern part of the Isthmus. From the 16th to the 18th century it was an important silver-exporting port in New Granada on the Spanish Main and one of the ports on the route of the Spanish treasure fleets. Today, Portobelo is a sleepy town with a population of fewer than 5,000. It has a deep natural harbour. In 1980 the ruins of the fortification, along with nearby Fort San Lorenzo, were declared a World Heritage Site.

Tourist Offices
There is a very helpful tourist information office in the town centre.

Sightseeing
Arrange a tour to go scuba diving, or explore the land alone on horseback or by hiking.

Getting there
There is a regular bus to Portobelo from Colón, if you're coming from Panama City you will have to switch buses at Colón.
