El Real is a frontier jungle town and the weather is hot and steamy. The town was built by Spanish Conquistadors to offer protection for the transportation of the gold from the Cana Mine. But today, it has grown in strength and can be regarded as one of the largest settlements in Darién. It is the arrival and departure point for travellers for the interiors of the state. The most prominent sight is the handful of women who can usually be spotted playing Bingo near the town square. Basic hotel accommodations provide relief to weary travellers and local cuisines can add a little bit of spice and create a wonderful dining experience.
