Chitré is the capital of the Panamanian province Herrera. It is located about 7 km inland from the Gulf of Panama on the Azuero Peninsula. The natural vegetation of the region is tropical dry forest, although most of the forest has been cut down. The town has an energetic air that gets you in the mood for fiesta, it's also a great base for exploring the surrounding attractions.
Sightseeing
The carnival celebrations in the city are well-known. They are some of the most famous in the country, and coincide with the celebrations of the Holy Week, Corpus Christi, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the city.
Getting there
There are daily flights from Panama City, Colón, David and Contadora. You can also travel here by bus form Panama City or, more locally, from Pesé, Playa Agallito, La Arena and Las Tablas.
