Refugio de Vida Silvestre Cenegón del Mangle is a 1000ha mangrove conservation area that is famous for its herons. This is in fact a popular nesting ground for them. The conservation area close to Parita and the Cenegón del Mangle are prime bird habitats. It was created in 1980 to protect the mangroves close to the Santa Maria river basin. You can enjoy the trails over the boardwalk past the birds nesting sites and the caiman spots. There are some small natural craters known as Los Positos, which have been created nearby and their waters are said to treat arthritis and rheumatism. Apart from the heron and the caiman, you can also get a glimpse of iguanas, ducks, spoonbills, yellow billed cotingas and possibly the elusive jabiru.
